I've been sitting back and reading posts about the DIR vs strokes war
on this NG for a while now. It's about time to contribute. Last week I
had the opportunity ( although at the time it felt more like an
obligation) to attend a DIR fundamentals class in NYC. Yes this would
be the same class that Udo had posted an open spot for and took alot
of heat for spamming. Well, guys, you should have been there.
I too, was getting tired of the internet personalities preaching DIR.
I was under the impression that to be DIR all you need is a backplate,
wings, long hose and an ATTITUDE!!!! Boy was I wrong.
The class was taught by the master, Andrew G. with MHK along for
backup. I expected the attitude, but these guys are really down to
earth and great people . In attendance were Cliff ( who returned from
San Diego just to be with us), Udo, Taz and Trace. Before I took the
class, Trace and I had been whining to Udo,"Why do we have to take DIR
fundamentals, we know how to dive". I must admit that the first day in
the water, we all felt a little inadequate. Trace and I, both being
Scuba instructors, probably had the hardest time accepting this. But
by the second day, we were seeing the light. DIR is more than
equipment, more than frog kicks and helicopter turns, it is a whole new
way of diving.
I won't be one to preach, but don't let the personalities on this and
other NGs try to influence you. If you want to dive DIR, learn the
skills from the best.
Just my 2 cents worth.
Lori
