You either enter together, or a wave set apart. Depending on the day, the latter could be a significant time interval, so I suspect it usually wouldn't be done.
In Monterey the surf zone is short so it's simple enough for the buddy to dump the gear and then go assist. You'd wait a few wave cycles before rendering assistance anyway.
