I was interested in Ken's discussion of the fate of abalone in recent years because, back in the early 1980s, as a newspaper reporter I did a story on the abalone situation. At the time there was a joint effort of recreational divers, industry and maybe the state to reseed the abalone population. I remember going out on a boat with some divers to the front side of Catalina near Avalon where they were "planting" baby abalone.

I gather that that effort must have been shortlived or ineffective, because it sounds from Ken's message that abalone population continued to decline. A quick web search seems to indicate that withering foot disease came along in the late 1990s.

Does anyone recall that reseeding effort of a couple of decades back? I guess it didn't work?
