I agree that most (including myself) instructors are not in this for the money. We do have to maintain and purchase gear, pay membership fees, insurance, etc to our respective organisations though, and it is nice to have some income to offset these costs. The store uses the cheap class as a loss leader in hopes of selling gear to the student. Shouldn't the person providing the instruction be worth something? There should be some incentive for good instructors to hang around.
