Blue Dolphin:
Rent first. Keep notes in your log book not only about the dive but also on the size, manufacturer, model, and your satisfaction with each piece of equipment. Note whether or not the tank was Aluminum or steel, how large it was, and how long you were able to stay down.
Not only will these notes help you shop for gear when the time comes, but also it will help you survive at the rental counter, especially if you got a piece of gear that did not work for you, or if you needed more weight for the equipment configuration you got the last time (don't trust your memory for this - it is very important!). And also, it will provide great memories for you in the future when you look back on your notes.
And finally, get involved in dive clubs. Best way to meet more divers and learn about all the great and wonderful opportunities you can now explore.
