I managed to track down some info from the
ba_diving archives. It happened July 14, 1999.
The victim's name was Dereck Owen. He and two
buddies were spearfishing (probably for halibut)
off Del Monte Beach. They had finished their
dive and were reboarding their kayaks when one of
the buddies spearguns discharged (YES, it should
have already been unloaded) striking Derek in the
spine.
