I'll agree with seahunt that CA is particularly rough on the kids, as well as the small adults. The gear outweighs them or comes close, and it's hard to stay warm. With kids growing, it's even harder to get a good wetsuit for them. In LA, that might mean diving in the July-Sept timeframe when the water is considerably warmer.
Even if they're brilliant divers, when they start getting cold, they'll lose their motor skills and don't have the experience to easily deal with it.
