Yesterday I went to Catalina on the Great Escape with my girlfriend Kathryn.
The ocean was as calm as a lake all day.
Our first dive site was Black Rock.
Captain Tim anchored about 40 yards east of the rock.
There was a slight current running down the island from west to east, however since the better bug spot is that way I started my dive swimming with the current.
I saw quite a few legal bugs, but they were mostly to far back to get at.
I pulled one barley legal one, but I had to take my pack off to get at it.
Another diver brought back two nice bugs from the same spot.
The visibility was about 40 ft, with water temperature at 54 °F. at depths down to 100 ft.
The next spot was Johnson rock.
There was no current there, but the vis was only about 20 ft.
I saw nothing but short bugs there.
The next dive was Arrow point., here the vis was about 60 ft., and I saw many large bugs, one that was way back in looked to be about 8 lbs.
Here again the water was 54 °F.
I managed to pull two nice bugs here, one about 3 lbs. and another less than 2 lbs.
Bob and Carol also each brought back a bug.
It was a great day of diving.
For me pulling three bugs during the day at Catalina is a good outing.
Those of you who choose to sit this day out missed one of the nicest diving days I've had here in over a month.
The food was great, the diving was good, the ocean was calm, you could hardly ask for a better day!
