One word of warning: Watch the airport codes.
San Jose, Costa Rica is SJO. San Jose, Calif.
(Silicon Valley International) is SJC. Memorize
this and check it. I've twice had them try to
send my bags to the wrong San Jose. Once from
Raleigh, NC (IIRC) to SJO when my ticket said
SJC. And the second one was a dilly: I was
flying from SJC to Houston to SJO on a dive trip,
and they tried to route my bags SJC to Houston
and BACK to SJC. And this was at SJC!

Memorizing airport codes is a good idea, but this
one has bitten a number of people. It's not as
bad now with the computer generated bag tags that
are tied to your ticket, but it used to be a real
problem when bag tags were all done by hand.

Costa Rica is a great country, and friendly to
Americans. Most people are literate (they don't
have a military and instead put that money into
education).
