We flew to San Jose, got driven to Tamarindo (we had taken a red eye and felt it was safer to have someone else do the driving). Then we got a rental car (4 wheel drive SUV) in Tamarindo. We drove it back to San Jose to catch the plane home. It's quite an adventure driving in Costa Rica as a lot of the roads are dirt and the main highway is just 2 lanes.

I might mention that we had an outfit called Adventure Dive Tours and Travel set the whole thing up. They did a great job with the hotel, car, tours, etc. In retrospect I think they were a bit pricey, but well worth it since we hadn't been to Costa Rica before and would never had been able to make the same arrangements. I found them via the internet and advertising in Rodales.
