It has been found that the organism that causes Sudden Oak Death (SOD)
and has killed thousands of oak trees from Monterey north, can infect
Redwood trees. This is a bit surprising since they are such different
plants, oakes verses conifers. Apparently the bug is related to the
one that causes the potato blight as well.
It will be some months before it is known if the disease kills redwoods
or not. It may just be carrier.
In any case, I can think of few enviornmental calamities comparable
to the loss of the redwoods. I sure hope that does not happen to
California.
