I haven't been able to find any studies regarding the CA Spiney's travel habits either.
The FL spiney's are a different matter, they get a lot more attention because of the impact the fishery has on the local economy.
Most of the FL variety are transient as well as migratory, traveling sometimes hundreds of miles.
For the most part, the researchers really don't know a whole lot about their traveling habits.
It's a blast when you run across a bug walk. You can start snatching them from the end of the line & unless you spook 'em, you can grab the whole mess. (local regulations permitting, of course)
