I've never been down as far as Loreto, but I have been down just south of Ensenada numerous times. My best advice: don't drive at night (too many animals and drunk drivers on the road) and don't try to cross back into San Diego during peak times, it'll take hours. Rather, try to go very early in the morning or very late at night. Other than that, the driving isn't any worse than it is here. Most of the roads, especially the toll road, is just fine, and there are many places to stop to eat and gas up along the way. Hope that helps.
