Studies of human remains from the ancient fishing villages of the west coast of South America, show individuals with with the boney growth of the inner ear bones that is a characteristic of divers that have sent a lot of time in cold water. As these remains are more than 3000 years old, they are considered to be the earliest example of an occupationally caused disease.
