You were a bit luckier than me. I was at Church Rock and there was a
nice green ab at the entrance of a hole. I was a bit paranoid, so I
reached in the hole a couple times before the ab was loose enough to be
pulled out. That moray had a philosophy of playing the man, not the
ab. Instead of any tug of war, he just snapped once. It shredded my
gloves and some of the skin of my hand. It was the double season, so I
spent the rest of the dive hunting lobster from about 12 feet above the
bottom. I've gotten minor nips a couple of other times. In all cases, I
think I was just being asked to leave. They bit and instantly let go.
They have incredibly sharp teeth and can dice good leather
gloves like they were nothing.
Did you ever go on the Golden Dabloon when they used to use the crane to
lift the atpacs on board? It was a nice rig, but a bit too much in one
package.
Your mention of diving the shallows is funny. Most divers won't go in
that area. Years back I took a friend of mine snorkling near Fort Ross.
We were an a very shallow spit of rocks (he didn't know not to). As some
other divers worked our way, I told him to watch when they got near.
Sure enough, as they got in the shallows near us, they were just too
uncomfortable that shallow and boogied. .. On my site I do have what I
think is a cool essay on diving the tidepools. In the shallow water,
everything is close by and brilliantly lighted. It makes for beautiful
diving.

Enjoy, seahunt
