I'm not sure if I understand your trim reactions, but to comment on the nucleus: the advantage of having a horizontal trim is less drag when moving forward, less silting up when close to the bottom, and better air (= loft) distribution when diving a drysuit.

I personally also enjoy more the feeling of flying or hovering when I'm horizontal. Coming close to flying is an important aspect of my enjoyment of diving.

To achieve this horizontal trim without any effort (i.e., without helping it with hands or fins), individual divers may need individual weight dispersion. I personally need a lot of weight high up on my body. The SS backplate helps in this pursuit, and so do the trim options of my weight & trim harness.
