I checked the books that I have and they support what you have said. "Probably More Than You Want To Know About The Fished of the Pacific Cost" has a interesting section on eels. Also, "Intertidal Invertebrates of California" doesn't speak specifically about eels but it says that the Green Abalone do better when in close proximity to eels because the eels eat some of the abalone predators.
