The part about the eustachian tubes was of particular interest to me. When I dove as a child, I had a much tougher time equalizing my ears. Fortunately, my hearing is still really good, but it used to be a lot better in the high frequency ranges. Whether the decay is due to diving, age, marriage or other is unknown. Coupled with the notion of "concrete" thinking and the potential to force bubbles through a PFO during forceful valsalva, the physiological issue of eustachian tube development took on additional dimensions.
