"the growth of scuba-diver tourism are threatening over half the world's reef"

While that may be an extreme statement, it may also not be THAT far off the mark.

As a scuba instructor, the dicotomy I face is that every time I teach someone to dive, I am also helping to kill part of the ocean because no matter how careful you are, you WILL break off a piece of coral, you WILL inadvertently chase an animla from a protected enclave, etc., etc. There's definitely human impact when we enter the ocean no matter how careful you try to be.

So it's a conundrum of teaching that by introducing more and more people to the beauties of the underwater world, we may be threatening the very beauty and serenity that attracted us in the first place.
