We humans take **way** too much credit. Even a cursory perusal of the geologic record will show continous variation in size, density, and key species of coral "reefs." And the current oceanic conditions are not to accomodating for the Scleractinian corals that have been the key reefbuilding species for the last several thousand years.
We have accelerated the process, in some places more than in others. But while the myopic are screaming and crying about someone bumping a piece of coral (and probably getting more injured than the coral colony), industrial idiots are dumping crap in the oceans in inconceivable quantities. There's currently a sewage spill at McAbee beach in Monterey. Where are the "we're destroying the oceans" picketers? They're all ignoring it because they like flush toilets. Environmental extremists are the worst hypocrits on the planet. They make fundamentalists look like saints.
If you live within twenty miles of the coast, and you don't compost your own feces, recycle every possible renewable resource, ride a bike instead of drive, and if you even look at meat and fish in the supermarket, shut the hell up.
American Environmentalism is an oxymoron. We get upset about the environment because it makes us feel good about ourselves. It feeds our need to appear, "anti-establishment." And it's certainly easier to care about a kangaroo-rat in the field than a impoverished kid in the inner-city. What kind of screwed up world do we live in where there's more money to buy the land to protect vermin than to purchase books and pay teachers for our own children?
You want to see a travesty? Just look at the aftermath of the average Earth Day celebration. I hate Earth Day. A bunch of driveling morons eating their oh-so environmentally friendly Kentucky Fried Chicken and Big Macs, littering the park with their trash, listening to paid speakers drone on about the enslavement of third world countries and corporate imperialism, before they get back in their gas guzzling SUVs and drive home.
