You'll see them by the hundreds in very shallow water at a dive site called Marine Room in La Jolla -- not all the time, just when they're around... often late summer/early fall. Sometimes the pattern varies, though. Marine Room is at the south end of the La Jolla Shores beach. Snorkel just outside the surf zone, don't move at all, and they'll go right under you. You could reach out and touch them... and the big ones are as long as you are! Swarms and swarms and swarms of them. Usually smoothhound sharks and shovelnose also. It's really, really cool.
