I don't see machismo as a problem.
What I do see, especially when I DM and pay attention to such things, is people chiding their buddies to make a dive they are not comfortable making.
I believe this is a dangerous practice, and although I have never seen a diving disaster develop, I have had to rescue the buddy that did not want to go.

When I dive with a buddy or guide a group of divers I always make it a point to let them know:
1) I will never be upset if they call the dive for any reason!
2) They should call the dive if they are not comfortable with it.
3) I will call the dive if I think there is an unsafe condition.
4) They should call the dive if they believe there is an unsafe condition.

It is been many years since I took my basic LA county scuba class, but don't they teach this any more?
