If you're using a good camera (i.e. three chip digital), the color temperature probably matters and 18 watt HID is about 6000 Kelvin-close to natural light. If not, the older halogen's are a lot cheaper. A friend of mine found the halogens worked better in caves with a TRV 900 than the 18 watt HID's. But things other than color matter more in caves. Deep California wrecks are similar to caves in that regard. You really need to worry about hot spots with halogens, but diffusers tackle that.
