Monterey is great, a tad colder than SoCal but there is some easy beach dives (the breakwater, McAbee, etc) and the boat rides are short (take the Monterey Express for the quickest ride). My best advice for you is to get a good, warm, well- fitting wetsuit. Dress properly and you will have a great time, wear a worn, ill-fitting rental suit with a seperate hood and you will be a warm water vacation diver again. :) You wouldn't go skiing in the mountains in ratty old ski clothes would you? So go out, invest in a nice warm suit, remember get the hood attached to something, a vest, the jacket etc. that will make you oh so much warmer!!!! And have a great time!
