A. You can do a beach dive, if you are familiar with surf/beach entries. There are several dive shops around to 'rent' you the equipment at a moments notice, and depending on where in So. California you will be, some good beach dives can be had.

B. A better alternative would be to get to Catalina Island (although, in the peak season, the ferries sell out just about every day). Then, once you are there, walk to the 'Casino Point' underwater park. A trailer right at the water front will rent you ALL the equipment you will need for diving. The 'entry' in the water is REAL easy, as you just put you gear on, and 'walk' down some stairs, straight into the water.

To better answer your question(s), tell us
1. When will you be coming to California?
2. Where will you be situated? (California is BIG)
3. How many days will you be here?

We can then offer some more advice.

Regards,

Ed.
