You may want to try your hand at making your own blanks.
Yank the bullets out of some .22 shells, tamp a tiny wad of cotton or tissue paper in, and top off with melted paraffin (candle wax)
Use both safety glasses and a face shield, never grab the base of the shell with a pliers.
If you think that getting blown up slightly may bother you, wear some leather & use gloves.
