That island may be about the only place to dive in the immediate Cancun area. However, if I were you I'd grab a taxi or bus a half hour south to Playa del Carmen, get a boat to Cozumel and do some real reef diving. Or keep going south to the Akumal area and do a cavern dive in one of the cenotes.
My family and I are repeat vacationers to that area. We stayed one night in Cancun on our first trip and that was enough (very Americanized, Planet Hollywood, etc etc). There are some nice restful spots down the coast, though. However, everyone has different tastes, so I guess Cancun has to be for someone!
