You can take a fast ferry over (1 hour crossing in a fully stabilized BIG boat) and the whole family will enjoy the day. Lots to do and see. There are beaches, glass bottom boats, shops, galleries, tour of the "casino" (well worth it), etc.
In walking distance of the dock is some really nice southern California diving at an underwater park. You can rent gear just steps away from the stairs that lead to the sea. The vis is almost always outstanding and you will see CA at its best and easiest.
Everyone will have a good time. The city of Avalon is so nice that our family often drives over in our boat for the day to just get away from it all -- even if we do not take dive gear. Oh yea, on several days each week, the cruise ships stop there (so you know it must be seen as a nice place to walk around as a tourist).
