I guess you could. The point is not whether the students wear a BC or not but whether they use it or not. I think you can teach better buoyancy skills if you make the student use existing tools first, like his lungs.
Would using tables vs. a computer take away from your power of learning?
Diving on snorkel or even breathhold vs. scuba?
Diving without a mask vs. with a mask?
That's how I was taught (OK, it was 13 years ago) and I strongly believe I learned more than today's average student. I'm not saying I have better skills, I'm saying I learned more.
