Chris, I think that the real issue here is not Superior mobility, but that you give up some of your life-support equipment for this mobility.
I think that the drag issue is also a non-issue. You could easily configurer a wing with a backpack(bungie it in, or buy one that folds in). You would then have the same freedom and still have your backup floatation.
Having good water skills has always been important. But sometimes things happen(even to the best of the best of the best). Why dive retro when there is a better way?
