Actually, I really don't have much of an expert opinion on the subject, I just like that picture. I'll make a comment or two if you like though.
What you do know is that he got bent. It would be reasonable to guess that if he was on NITROX he would have been less likely to have gotten bent. Aside from that, there is no real way to know just how deep he went. If he went to 140 feet, he may well have been in a place where the NITROX could have been fatal.
While it might be true that a NITROX diver is likely to have more training, I have often seen cases where training had more to do with the enthusiasm of the diver than their skill or experience.
I'm glad to hear the got into the chamber and I hope he recovers well.
