Millions of shrimp near Redondo Beach??!!!

I have only lived in So. CA for about a year now and do a lot of free diving just south of Redondo Beach.

Last week I was met with millions of floating shrimp (so much as to make the dive quite uncomfortable!) When do they thin out? Is it breeding season or what?

Any info would be good.
