Over the years I have had exhaust valves (flappers) and diaphrams give problems with old age. Well, not me personally, but my regulators. I have also had leaks from o-rings not sealing from dirt getting where it shouldn't. Ozone, car exhaust, beach sand, and the like take their toll on regulator parts. So it is important to get periodic servicing. The frequency is the real debate issue. I feel comfy with a service interval stretching to 2 years in some cases, but so much depends on how the gear is cleaned and stored that I would not recommend going past the annual cycle.
