its been about 10 years since a freediver has been hit by Whitey, and about a year since a surfer has been hit, along the North Coast. both were solo at the time.

Whitey normally cruises for lone animals, be they seals or surfers or freedivers, more or less in that order, probably more likely due to relative numbers of seals, surfers, and freedivers in the ocean, suggesting whitey is indifferent.

not sure why lone surfers and freedivers end up being the target. maybe because there are less pairs of eyes watching the ocean then. maybe the shark is a cowardly overly cautious fish that has learned that lone animals are probably injured or ill and wont put up a fight.

solo sports in the ocean dont allow for a rescue by anyone else, when there is trouble. and whitey is trouble alright.
