Shirley, Sharks are kind of like the women divers discussed below... There are times and places where even a beer bellied' guy might have to fight them off, but not around here in socal(and maybe only in our dreams). If you play the odds, you shouldn't ever have to worry about encountering a shark capable of doing real harm. If you do dive a spot where White Sharks are actually sighted, I might sit out the next dive and wouldn't push my luck though. This happens a couple times a year at Catalina and more often way up north. I haven't seen one capable of doing any real harm in about 35+ years of skin and scuba diving down here, although even the small common varieties will nip at you if you grab their tail. Don't touch unless your hungry and your OK....
