Victor, the last head on head regulator test were done in 1989. They broke the regulators into three different classification. The Mares regulator was in the third classification which meant that the Navy would not use it(the Voit regulator design came about in the late 60's).
Mares bought the Voit regulator design back in the 80's. And they have not changed it, but for the cosmetics.
It has nowhere near the performance of the any the Scubapro balanced second stage regulators, or the Atomic balanced second stages. Also the Scubapro and the Atomic are both high volume high flow piston first stages. The Mares diaphram first stage has nowhere near the volume of the pistons.
Mares is a French company which seems to have more of an eye towards marketing then they do function. The HUD system is a prime example, this unit has Too many failure point to list.
Victor if you really look at diving equipment,as life support, you may change your mind about Mares.
