I think what matters most is the kind of diving you do and where you do it.
If you are a beach diver, tey are almost mandatory. If you diver where it gets rough or you get away from the boat, they are great.
If you dive off Florida and never leave the boat by more than 200 feet, well, maybe you don't need one.
I use one regularly, especially when I do shallow dives at the islands and may snorkel for as much time as I scuba.
Whether you use one or not, ignore the people that scoff at them. They have their places.
