I use one for snorkeling but not for diving. For surface swims I turtleback. I also keep enough gas in the tank to go under the kelp. One technique for really long surface swims is to remove the tank and, with the wing inflated, push it ahead of you. You can then use a variety of kick strokes and the drag is a lot less. This works best with a wing BC, but doesn't work well in kelp or in heavy boat traffic.
