Looking at it more closely, you will agree that normally, a kelp strand holds the bladders behind which a full blade has grown. It is these blades creating 'volume' that makes it hard for the bladders to get close enough to your reg to snag. Swimming slowly helps with that. However, on one of the rare bare strands with just bladders and no blades, it could happen what you described. Let's just help keep kelp healthy, so there will always be blades attached :-)
