As I said before, the base 10 nature of the metric system contributed nothing in the current situation. That the gram was based on 1ml of water, making one coefficient 1.0 is what made things simpler.

Liquids are base 2 in Imperial, and I find that useful enough for the quantities we deal in on a daily basis - cup - pint - quart - half gallon - gallon. 354ml is not nearly as pleasant to work with as one 12oz can of soda.

Likewise the meter is too large a unit for usage like people's height.

Any smart fellow can work interchangeably between the two systems, using the more convenient unit.
