I've been thinking the same thing after seeing a small 2 man submarine on display a couple of weeks ago in the Fisherman's Wharf area of San Francisco. It was built by some college kids for some sort of project and used trolling motors for propulsion. I think the placard mentioned that it went to 100 ft or so. I'm not sure on the depth rating of a trolling motor but it seems like a logical starting point. I'm guessing water would leak around the shaft seal at some point...
