I also appreciate the difference between being a good swimmer and being a fast swimmer. Speed takes technique, strength and training. I believe you can be a good swimmer without much of those if you have the heart and stamina to keep going. That's why the unaided test is important in my construct. The unaided swim is uncomfortable for some. If I were responsible for others, I would want to know they had the heart to overcome the discomfort, regardless of how long or how awkward the event, and a certain minimum of stamina.
