If they're the same as down in San Diego, they're not Humboldt Squid. They're Jumbo Flying Squid or something like that... Smaller. Not sure if as aggressive as Humboldts...
I _THINK_ I saw one last night off La Jolla Shores, but he didn't want to be near us... One of my buddies had a similar edge-of-vis maybe big squid sighting.
Here's a photo of a couple of them washed ashore, taken by Annette Henry of the DFG -- it'll give you an idea of the size (compare to footprints):
