A buddy worked a river in the Sierra's in the early 80's. They would dredge the deepest holes in river with a small dredging operation. They were on scuba and would focus on dredging up the gravel that was trapped under the largest boulders. They did quite well. The silt was directed into makeshift ponds and had no effect on the river. The Sierra Club challenged the operation in court, which was a persistant headache, but the marijuana growers were the bigger problem. They caused more disruption with sabotage to the operation. Ultimately my buddies went to Nevada.
I kind of makes you wonder if the Sierra Club is a front to a bigger darker organization.
