I understand what you are saying but the stair issue is important in this situation. These were basic students not certified yet. This instructor if teaching them a rock entry was using poor judgement in his approach, it does not sound like that though. What if one of them had fallen and hurt themselves, it would not have been necessary.
That would have been at issue though if somebody had gotten hurt. The first question would be why are you not using the stairs. If this instructor will take a unecessary risk what else may he decide to put at risk?? Your other points are well taken though and I agree with you.
