Like anything else there is good and bad. The small shops I used to frequent, if it weren't for the instructors and their efforts to turn out a quality and safe diver was the compeling reason why I went back time and time again.. The owners only interest IMHO was the profit line. Once you got ceritifed and owned equipment the motive to keep you as a customer and diver was diminished. I also frequent S.C. I've been to one location that the scuba manager insisted that his hires are Divemasters or above. The sale of equipment was of importance but not a priority, like in some small shops.
