I teach mask on and reg in the mouth in the surf. I believe the risk of drowning to be much greater than that of an embolism. A local club had a drowning a few years ago where an experienced diver, knocked down by a wave, aspirated sea water and died the next day. Had she been able to keep the reg, she'd still be diving.
