El Cap and Refugio are pretty nice.

Hey Chris, that's my old stomping (as in formerly chronically overweighted..) ground. I haven't dove El Cap itself in a long time, but it does have some patch reefs. The best thing do to is cruise up 101 north of there and look for little turnouts along the highway. Park there and walk across the tracks. There's usually a path. Sometimes you have to hop off a RR seawall.

Tajiguas (go north of Refugio, pull a U at the freeway break) has a nice reef, as does Refugio. The reefs are really just the worn down bluff, with lots of niches and, hopefully, critters (swell sharks, Angel sharks in the sand, etc.) The first little turnout south of Refugio (pull a U at the state park) has a nice beach and usually healthy kelp beds. Good place for halibut, too.

Now you got me all fired up. I'm tempted to do a beach dive before the D2D trip.

- Tom
