To become one you need to be at least rescue ceritfied and have 50 dives logged. Procedure is as follows:
1) fill in the application form
2) get accepted and go for a written test and in water checkups at Pacific Wilderness at San Pedro
3) Get medical approving you to dive for work ($100)
4) start your shift

What you do as a volunteer:
1) scrub artificial coral
2) feed fishes
3) do presentations

Aquarium offers by cost CPR and DAN O2 to volunteers + extra trainig to specific jobs you will perform. I know of at least 6 people that post over here that also dive in aquarium

As of two weeks ago we had 160-170 volunteer divers (according to Pete Pehl, AOP dive safety officer).

Check AOP website for details and how to obtain the application form.

It's really cool thing to do :). I also heard there's another diver day comming this Autumn so you may get a chance to chek it out yourself for free.
