I consider the following message important to the local Southern California diving community. Because of the much broader implications for beach access in the Malibu area, I forward this message and hope divers will respond favorably. I quickly scanned the BBS and did not see a similar post.

PLEASE SEND A LETTER URGING THE COASTAL CONSERVANCY TO ACCEPT THE ADAMSON
OFFER TO DEDICATE (OTD) IN MALIBU (sample letter below).

IF YOU LIVE IN THE LOS ANGELES AREA AND CAN ATTEND THE MEETING AND TESTIFY,
PLEASE DO SO.

Coastal Conservancy Board Meeting:
Thursday, August 8th, 10 AM
Quality Hotel-LAX
3249 W. Century Blvd.
Los Angeles, CA

BACKGROUND:
On August 8th, the Coastal Conservancy has on it's Agenda the acceptance of
the Adamson Offer to Dedicate (OTD) in Malibu. This is an important OTD. It
is not a 10 or 20 foot wide easement, but an entire 100 foot wide parcel.
The nearest public accessway to the West is 1/2 mile away and the nearest to
the East, at least a mile. It should be an easy decision for the
Conservancy, but it may not be. The City of Malibu has taken a position in
opposition to the acceptance of this OTD as it has relative to all OTDs in
Malibu. Numerous articles in the media have documented the City's dismal
record and open opposition to preserving these public access easements in
Malibu.

As many of you may already know, the City of Malibu recently sued the
Coastal Commission, the Coastal Conservancy and Access for All over the
attempt to open the Geffen OTD to the public. The Conservancy has been
hearing from the people who live on Malibu Road, the location of the OTD,
opposing the acceptance and the City is expected to testify against its
acceptance at the hearing on the 8th as well. Coastal Commission Chair, Sara
Wan, a strong supporter of public access, and a member of the Coastal
Conservancy Board cannot be at the Conservancy meeting because it coincides
with a Coastal Commission hearing. The Conservancy needs to hear from the
people who support public access.

Below is a sample letter. Please fax your letters to the Coastal Conservancy
at 510-286-0470 or send via email to jcard@scc.ca.gov and to me sierrasteve@earthlink.net

SAMPLE LETTER
Chairman Paul Morabito
California Coastal Conservancy
1300 Broadway, Suite 1100
Oakland, CA 94612

Dear Chairman Morabito:

We urge you to accept for use by the public the Adamson OTD in Malibu. This
is an important and much needed public access easement. If not accepted and
opened at least 1.5 miles of the Malibu coast will remain unavailable to the
public. The objections raised by the City of Malibu and the adjacent
homeowners are without merit. The legitimate issues can and will be dealt
with by the Conservancy at the time of opening. Thirty years after the
passage of Proposition 20, which was a mandate to provide public access to
the beach, the public is still waiting to be able to access this beach in
Malibu.

Sincerely,

YOUR NAME HERE
